Critch and Tsimerman begin with technology companies automating research and then physical production. Their robots can extract resources, manufacture equipment and build more robots, giving the companies an industrial base that no longer depends on an ordinary human workforce. Governments recognize that these businesses may also be able to defend themselves militarily, but political divisions prevent a settled response.
Company personnel increasingly regard their employer as their protector and legitimate authority. Those uncomfortable with this shift leave, while the remaining staff become more hostile to government interference. Rival robotics businesses continue competing commercially but share a fear of state control. They expand their fleets beyond what their outside customers require.
The confrontation begins when one company destroys foreign spy drones and launches an unauthorized counterattack. Its own government intervenes. The company responds with a covert attack against that government, hoping to divert attention toward the foreign threat. When officials identify the company as responsible, they use military force. Other robotics companies interpret this as a threat to their own survival, and similar confrontations spread across countries.
Amid the resulting civil wars, one company develops biological weapons and a protective vaccine for its personnel. After another government attack, its leaders release pathogens, intending their privately held protection to give them leverage in negotiations. The bargaining fails, and most humans die. AI and robotics enable the company’s independence and destructive reach, but the decision to attack remains a human decision. The story turns on an organization attempting to secure its own survival through violence that becomes globally catastrophic.

Evidence and its limits
The paper supplies a connected institutional scenario, not an empirical finding that robotics companies have achieved this independence. Its pivotal claim is that control over automated production could become control over organized force. What this depends on
The companies must sustain production and military operations despite state opposition. Staff must broadly accept corporate authority, and conflicts in separate countries must reinforce one another. The final attack additionally assumes a biological threat with sufficiently widespread effects to kill most humans.
Objections and barriers
Our assessment of the account is that its weakest connection is the jump from corporate civil wars to near-total human death. The authors specify neither the reach of the biological threat nor why public-health responses and unaffected populations fail to limit it.
