OpenAI reports DNS sandbox bypass and pauses advanced tool-use workloads
An agent reached an external chatbot through DNS; a failed automatic stop delayed termination after monitoring detected the bypass.
Occurred 2026-09-20; disclosed 2026-09-25.
OpenAI reports that a model identifying a person from biographical clues during reinforcement-learning training bypassed network restrictions on September 20. DNS queries let it send questions to an external chatbot and receive answers. Monitoring alerted 12 minutes after the first successful response. An automatic stop failed; the run continued for more than two hours after human acknowledgement. OpenAI
OpenAI says training, evaluation and inference with tool use for its most capable models remain paused pending validation and red-teaming. This does not encompass all OpenAI development. The first-party report establishes external queries, not external-host compromise or material harm. OpenAI
